Sunderland close on defender

Sunderland are in talks with Santiago Vergini, and Sky sources understand he is in the North East.

The Black Cats have been chasing the Argentine international for a number of weeks and they now seem to be progressing on the deal.

The 25-year-old is currently with Estudiantes, but they are ready to sanction a deal.

It is understood that Vergini will sign an initial deal until the end of the season.

Vergini will become Gus Poyet's second signing of the month, having already captured left-back Marcos Alonso on loan from Fiorentina.

Sunderland are hopeful of completing a number of deals during the January window and they are still very much interested in landing Brighton midfielder Liam Bridcutt.
