Super Chennai win to go clear

Kevin Pietersen was out first ball as Delhi Daredevils lost by eight wickets to Indian Premier League leaders Chennai Super Kings on Monday.

Former England batsman Pietersen was bowled by Mohit Sharma as Delhi posted 178-5 from their 20 overs, with Dinesh Karthik top scoring with 51.

In reply, Chennai chased the total down with two balls to spare, with Dwayne Smith hitting 79 as the leaders posted 181-2 to notch their sixth straight IPL win.

Opener Smith struck four fours and eight maximums in his 51-ball innings, which ultimately proved decisive.

He was ably supported by first Brendon McCullum - who notched 32 in an opening stand of 82 in 11.2 overs, before the New Zealander was caught by Murali Vijay off Laxmi Shukla's bowling.

That brought Suresh Raina to the cease and he shared an 86 run partnership with Smith, before the opener was also caught by Vijay off the bowling of Wayne Parnell in the penultimate over.

However, Chennai skipper MS Dhoni struck a six and the winning four in the last over to see his side home with two balls to spare, while Raina remained unbeaten on 47 at the other end.

Earlier, Delhi posted a competitive total after losing the toss and being asked to bat, with Quinton de Kock (24) hitting three fours and two maximums to give his team a good start.

He was run out following a mix-up in the fifth over, with next man Pietersen getting a first-ball duck after being cleaned up by Sharma.

Dinesh and Vijay then steadied the ship - the pair adding 71 to provide the basis for their side's innings - but it ultimately proved to no avail as in-form Chennai won again.
