Swift exit as Howard triumphs
Australian Leigh Howard won the Trofeo Alcudia, the fourth race at the Challenge Mallorca, as Team Sky's Ben Swift suffered a nasty crash.
Swift, part of Great Britain's Olympic team at Beijing 2008, was taken to hospital after the crash on the final descent. The 25-year-old, third in Sunday's Trofeo Palma and fifth yesterday, crashed as he came down the Coll d'Honor late in today's 169.8km race.
Team doctor Alan Farrell offered an encouraging prognosis, though, telling teamsky.com: "Swifty had a bad crash on the decent.
"We brought him to hospital for further investigations and he is doing well. He is staying in overnight and should be able to leave hospital in the morning."
Swift's fellow Olympian Bradley Wiggins, who has played a supporting role to his team-mate as he prepares for the Tour of Oman next week, withdrew after around 70km.
Howard, riding for Orica GreenEDGE, took the race win ahead of Maarten Wynants (Blanco Cycling) and Davide Cimolai (Lampre-Merida).
