Sykes captures US pole

Britain's Tom Sykes has claimed pole position for the ninth round of the World Superbike Championship at the Laguna Seca circuit in California.

The Kawasaki Racing Team rider capped a thrilling Superpole 2 in hot and sunny weather with a superb lap of one minute 21.811 seconds to set a new lap record at the American track.

Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) had set the early pace in the session and he managed to take second place on the grid, 0.528 seconds behind championship leader and reigning champion Sykes.

Britain's Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team) claimed the final front row starting position, while Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team), Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team) and Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) will start from fourth, fifth and sixth on the grid respectively.

Briton Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) will start in 10th position after escaping unhurt from a crash.

Christian Iddon (Team Bimota Alstare) fell in Superpole 1 but the British rider was also unhurt and will be able to race on Sunday.
