Telwaar (9-2) came from last to first to win the Listed European Free Handicap at Newmarket.
William Buick produced an ice-cool ride aboard the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained horse to swoop wide and late to snatch the prize from the front-running Bannock (12-1).
Evens-favourite Zumbi couldn't pick up close to the rail and finished a never-nearer fifth.
"He's definitely better on fast ground but this was the race for him, " said Chapple-Hyam. "He needs holding up as long as possible and he's only got one run but he can be very effective.
"He's not in the Guineas but he's in the French Guineas. I'm not sure he will get a mile and I've got the Jersey in mind for him. A strongly run seven furlongs there would be ideal."
