The Goldie touch at Ayr
Jim Goldie maintained his fine record at Ayr this season by notching his 15th and 16th winners at the Scottish venue.
Compton Heights (9/1) was a maiden prior to the RBS Mentor Handicap but he always looked like collecting under Graham Lee.
And though Richard Fahey's Khelman finished fast into second, he was still a length and a quarter down at the line.
"I think we've been trying to be too clever with him," said Goldie.
"He's quite a nervy horse and we've been running him in a hood to get him to relax and settle.
"But it wasn't working, so we took the hood off and just let him run and he did it well.
"I think he can build on this as he's got the physique and scope to be a nice horse if we can just sort his breathing and all the rest of it.
"He'll probably run again (this season).
"He likes decent ground so we're lucky to be running on it on October 1."
Grand Diamond (12/1) won the Debra Charity Handicap in the hands of young Jordan Nason, who has a good strike-rate when riding for Goldie.
"We've had a good year here," Goldie told Racing UK.
"We had some near-misses at the Western meeting, but most of our targets ended up in the winner's enclosure.
"As it's our local track, it's good to perform here."
Another Scottish trainer having a profitable campaign is Keith Dalgleish , who took his Ayr tally to nine when Sandra's Diamond (4/5 favourite) and Natures Law (11/2) were on the scoresheet in their respective heats.
David O'Meara continues to bang in the winners and the 16/1 success of Marlismamma in the £25 Free Bet At BetVictor.com Nursery Handicap once again advertised his talents.
Three no-shows in maidens hardly suggested she was ready to break her maiden, but Julie Burke steered her home to win by half a length.
"She did it well. I suppose I hit the front a bit too soon, but I had no other choice," said Burke.
"The rest of the horses were stopping and she had a good look around.
"Her second run wasn't that bad and she appreciated a step up in trip today."
Malton trainer John Quinn enjoyed a good Ayr Gold Cup meeting at the track and was back on the mark with Deliberation (6/1) in the second division of the Casino On Your Mobile At BetVictor.com Handicap.
