Three-game Smith ban upheld

Leeds United's appeal against Matt Smith's dismissal and subsequent three-match suspension has been unsuccessful.

Smith was given a straight red card in the early stages of the second half during Saturday's 6-0 hammering at Sheffield Wednesday for violent conduct after an incident with Owls skipper Reda Johnson.

United manager Brian McDermott was unhappy the Football Association had failed to overturn the referee's original decision.

McDermott said: "I can't understand why it wasn't overturned.

"I'm sure they will have their reasons, but there was no intent. He's gone in, in a fair way, he bumped into the player, and he went down easy.

"I don't believe the fracas afterwards was helpful with players from Sheffield Wednesday running a long way to get involved. I'm very disappointed with the outcome."

Smith will now miss the Championship home games against Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Huddersfield Town.
