Tigers back to winning ways
Miguel Cabrera, Torii Hunter and Austin Jackson all homered as the Detroit Tigers gained swift revenge over New York with a 9-3 rout.
Cabrera connected and finished with three hits at Yankee Stadium, Hunter went deep and drove in four runs and Jackson had a homer and a triple, while Anibal Sanchez pitched seven solid innings for the American League Central-leading Tigers, who had their 12-game winning snapped by the Yankees on Friday night.
The Yankees were without third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who was given the day off after striking out three times on his home season debut on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Oakland Athletics 5-4, Jose Bautista going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, and Will Middlebrooks celebrated his recall from Triple-A Pawtucket with a two-run single in a four-run fourth inning as the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox overcame the Kansas City Royals 5-3.
Also in the American League, Conor Gillaspie's go-ahead single in the sixth inning lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 5-4 success against the Minnesota Twins, the Los Angeles Angels toppled the Cleveland Indians 7-2 and the West-leading Texas Rangers squeezed past the Houston Astros 5-4.
In the National League, the East-leading Atlanta Braves' 14-game winning run came to an end in an unexpected 1-0 loss against last-placed Miami. Adeiny Hechavarria tripled and scored on a wild pitch by Jordan Walden in the ninth inning as the Marlins halted their six-game skid.
Darwin Barney and Dioner Navarro posted run-scoring doubles in the eighth inning as the Chicago Cubs edged St Louis 6-5, condemning the Cardinals to a fourth straight loss, while Jayson Werth's two-run homer in the seventh inning - his 1,000th major league career hit - spurred the Washington Nationals to an 8-5 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Also in NL action, the New York Mets saw off the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1, the Colorado Rockies were 6-4 winners against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres prevailed 3-1 against the Cincinnati Reds.
Adrian Gonzalez homered, Nick Punto had two RBI and Zack Greinke threw down 6 1/3 scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers toppled the Tampa Bay Rays 5-0 in Interleague play, while Tom Gorzelanny struck out seven in seven shutout innings for the Milwaukee Brewers in their 10-0 trouncing of the Seattle Mariners and the San Francisco Giants edged the Baltimore Orioles 3-2.
