Tip of the day: Icy blast

Ben Linfoot heads to Thirsk for our racing desk's tip of the day and he fancies an each-way bet in the mile handicap.

It's the calm before the storm with all the focus on York ahead of the Ebor Festival this week.

We're set for a cracking week in Yorkshire with Classic winners Australia and Taghrooda all set to strut their stuff on the Knavesmire and finding a few pounds to play with in all the other high-quality handicaps is the order of the day.

Confident punting opportunities are thin on the ground, but the Handicap at Thirsk offers a good chance for ICY BLUE to get back in the winner's circle.

Richard Whitaker's gelding hasn't won on turf since a victory at Thirsk in the August of 2011, so at least we know he has previous at this time of year at this track.

That win was off a mark of 61 and he races off a 1lb lower this afternoon with Joe Fanning on board for the second consecutive race.

His last run came at Pontefract over a mile where he ran well, but he lost a couple of places in the final furlong after taking up the lead two out.

Fanning should be able to get him a bit of cover in this bigger field and delay his challenge until late in the piece. He's handicapped to go close, the cut in the ground is not a concern and we know he's running pretty well.

It's a competitive heat, but nothing sticks out as obviously ahead of the handicapper and a small each-way bet on the son of Iceman is advised.
