Torch lights up Newmarket
A review of the rest of Thursday's action from Newmarket, where Torchlighter completed a double for Mark Johnston.
Torchlighter followed up a recent win at Windsor in impressive fashion in the boylesports.com Dowlnload Our App Handicap.
His career appeared to be going nowhere at seven furlongs earlier in the season but he was second over nine furlongs at Sandown and won last time out over a mile and a quarter.
Mark Johnston won this race with Maputo last year and while there did not appear as much strength in depth to this renewal, he had some decent performers a long way behind.
It was a double on the day for Joe Fanning and Johnston, who had earlier taken the Bahrain Trophy with St Leger-bound Hartnell.
The 13/2 chance took over two furlongs out and never looked like being caught, pulling five lengths clear of Ventura Quest.
Fanning said: "They went a nice gallop in front and it suited him down to the ground, he's won well.
"The step up in trip suited him well as he showed in his last run at Windsor where he won quite nice last time.
"He's taking his racing very well."
Johnston could not hide his delight at another winner. "We're singing in the rain," he said. "I was worried about the ground but my wife (Deirdre) had walked it and she assured me it would be fine.
"Joe's a very good judge of pace, and that's what won it. I hadn't really thought further than this race."
