Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Tour finals no harm as reached the Stockholm Open quarter-finals.
The Frenchman, currently clinging on to the eighth and final qualification place for next month's lucrative showdown in London, proved too strong for Japan's Go Soeda, coming through 6-2 7-6 (8/6) in 98 minutes.
Second seed Tomas Berdych, who already has one foot in London, beat Estonia's Jurgen Zopp 6-1 6-4, while seventh seed Marcos Baghdatis led Colombia's Alejandro Falla 6-0 3-0 when the Colombian retired.
Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky pulled off a minor upset to reach the quarter-final stage as he beat Spanish fifth seed Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 to advance.
