Graham Turner recognised the importance of Shrewsbury's 1-0 win over neighbours Walsall on Sunday.
Town, having not got the points some of their play has merited this season, rode their luck against the Saddlers as a fine goalkeeping performance from Chris Weale kept them in the encounter.
And it was left to Paul Parry's 25th-minute finish to prove the difference in Sunday's derby at the Greenhous Meadow.
Town slipped into League One's bottom four following results 24 hours earlier but they now sit in 15th place with a quarter of the season having been played.
Turner said: "It's a massive win and whatever else happened we needed the three points on the board.
"Our position before the game was a bit embarrassing to be in the bottom four so it was a big three points for us."
