Upson wins Brighton gong

Matt Upson has been named Brighton's player of the year after he polled 63 per cent of the vote from Seagulls fans.

Upson has enjoyed an impressive season at the heart of one of the Football League's meanest defences, making 45 appearances and also chipping in with two goals.

The centre-half hopes to shake off an ankle injury to be fit to face Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season as Brighton search for the win which could get them into the play-offs.

Left-back Stephen Ward finished second in the voting, with goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak third.

Midfielder Rohan Ince picked up the young player award, selected by boss Oscar Garcia and his coaching staff.
