Van Barneveld eases through

Raymond van Barneveld booked his place in the last 16 of the PDC World Darts Championship with a 4-1 victory over Ireland's Brendan Dolan.

Kevin Painter and Colin Lloyd joined van Barneveld in progressing, Painter edging a thriller against Ronnie Baxter and Lloyd overcoming the challenge of Mark Webster.

Van Barneveld started in clinical style, picking up from where he had left off in his first round victory over Michael Smith - in which he averaged 108 - as he won the first three legs to clinch the opening set, not missing a dart at a double.

In the first leg of the second set, Dolan managed to miss nine darts at a double allowing Barney to hit double-two to pinch it.

The Irishman's double troubles continued and it wasn't until his 15th effort that he finally located one to get on the board, but it was in vain as van Barneveld claimed the next two legs to move two sets up.

But Dolan roused himself in set three, winning it without the loss of a leg on the back of finishes of 100 and 124.

Indeed, he made it five legs on the trot and appeared on course to level the match, but van Barneveld - who had just started to look a little ragged and frustrated - stopped the rot with a 62 check-out.

The Dutchman then crucially broke back with a finish of 93 before taking the set as he followed a timely maximum by locating double-19 at the first time of asking to pull 3-1 ahead.

The loss of that set seemed to knock the wind out of Dolan's sails and, having broken by hitting double-nine in leg three, van Barneveld wrapped up victory as he took out 62 in two darts, securing a showdown with Gary Anderson in doing so.

Earlier in the session, Painter had edged a see-saw battle against Baxter. 'The Artist' looked in complete control as, with the match poised at one set all, he reeled off seven legs to move 3-1 ahead.

But Baxter then hit back by taking six on the trot to level the match and became favourite as he won the opening two legs of the decider.

Painter rallied again, though, and four consecutive legs saw him complete a remarkable triumph, setting up a last 16 clash against Dennis Ovens or Adrian Lewis in the process.

Lloyd defeated Webster 4-2, the Welshman paying the price for missing a number of chances to win the opening set as his opponent raced into a 3-0 lead.

Webster did take the next two to make a contest of it, but Lloyd ended in style with a superb ten-dart leg sealing his passage.
