Varian hails retiring Nahrain
Nahrain has been retired and will stand as a broodmare at Darley Stud.
Unraced as a juvenile, Roger Varian's four-year-old mare won her first four races, culminating in the Group One Prix de l'Opera at Longchamp.
She then travelled over to America for the Breeders' Cup where she was only narrowly beaten.
It took all of Varian's skills to get her back to that level last season after a few lacklustre runs but she won the Grade One Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont before disappointing in the Breeders' Cup.
"Nahrain left us (on Thursday) and will not race on as a five-year-old," the Newmarket handler told his website, www.varianstable.com.
"She has been a huge asset to the start of my training career, winning five of her 10 starts including two Group Ones.
"She has been a pleasure to train and I now hope she has a long and successful career as a broodmare.
"It is sad to see her go but she has given us some great days and we now have to work hard to find another one as good."
