Vekic KO in Kuala Lumpur
Teenager Donna Vekic was knocked out in the first round of the BMW Malaysian Open by America's Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Tuesday.
Vekic, 16, is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in women's tennis and is the youngest player in the top 100 by more than a year.
The Croatian, ranked 93, reached the second round of the Australian Open last month and was seeded sixth in Kuala Lumpur but lost out 6-3 4-6 6-2 to Mattek-Sands.
Rain wiped out all but one match on Monday and the weather intervened again, with only four main-draw matches being completed.
Fifth seed Misaki Doi secured her passage through to the second round with a 6-2 6-3 win over Alberta Brianti while Karolina Pliskova also lost five games in beating Casey Dellacqua and Patricia Mayr-Achleitner defeated Claire Feuerstein 6-3 6-4.
Third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was an early break up on Russian compatriot Vera Dushevina in the deciding set of their first-round clash when play was halted and they will have to come back on Wednesday.
