Venus on a Swiss roll
Venus Williams made a winning return in her first match since the US Open against Swiss 15-year-old Belinda Bencic in the Luxembourg Open.
Williams, who has struggled this year due to illness and injury, did not have it all her own way and was broken in the first set before recovering to move through with a 6-3 6-1 win.
Italian top seed Roberta Vinci was a 6-0 2-6 6-0 winner over Olga Govortsova of Belarus and second seed Julia Goerges of Germany needed just 68 minutes to dispatch Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain 6-2 6-1.
Serbia's Jelena Jankovic led Shuai Peng 3-0 when the Chinese player retired injured, while other winners were Sorana Cirstea, Lourdes Dominguez Lino, Kirsten Flipkens and Annika Beck.
