Verdasco in seventh heaven

Fernando Verdasco ended a six-match losing streak in ATP World Tour finals with a straight sets triumph over fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in the US Men's Clay Court Championship on Sunday.

The 30-year-old won 6-3 7-6 (7/4) in Houston to claim his sixth ATP World Tour title and first since 2010 in Barcelona.

The fourth seed won the first set with the only break, but last year's runner-up Almagro responded, surviving four break point chances as he opened up a 3-1 lead in the second set.

Verdasco battled back - although he had to survive a tense game at 4-5, fighting off five set points for Almagro - before he closed out the victory in the tie-break after one hour and 52 minutes on court.

The victory was the perfect response after Verdasco and David Marrero had lost 4-6 6-4 11-9 to twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan in Saturday's doubles final.
