Vesnina claims maiden title

Elena Vesnina of Russia claimed her first WTA title with victory in the final of the Hobart International.

Vesnina, better known as a doubles player, clinched a 6-3 6-4 success against defending champion Mona Barthel on Saturday.

The world number 68 had reached six finals before but had always come off second best.

She took the first set in 37 minutes with service breaks in the seventh and ninth games, clinching the match in an hour and 23 minutes with two breaks to one in the second set.

The 26-year-old defeated seeds Yaroslava Shvedova and Sloane Stephens along with former Australian event champion Jarmila Gajdosova on her way to the final.
