Villa captain eyes mid-table

Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar wants his team to put an end to their year-on-year struggle with relegation.

Villa beat Hull City 3-1 on Saturday to banish the threat of relegation and Vlaar is keen to avoid a repeat of their struggles next season.

The midlands club have struggled to avoid relegation from the Premier League for the last four years and Vlaar wants Villa to aim for mid-table safety next season.

He said: "It's been the third or fourth year in a row, Aston Villa needs to be better in my opinion and we have to show it on the pitch.

"We did it for the last month but it has to be over the whole season. We have to work really hard and I really believe we can do that.

"First start for us is we have to look to be a mid-table team and from there we can then look further forward."

Villa will have a big say on who will be the Premier League champions as they travel to face Manchester City at the Etihad on Wednesday night and Vlaar wants his team to finish the season on a high.

"We can change something there, the pressure is off now and we can play totally free and of course we will try to get a result there and finish the season good," he added.
