Vinci races into last eight
Roberta Vinci raced into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Monday, beating fellow Italian Camila Giorgi 6-4 6-2.
Vinci needed just 67 minutes to wrap up a 6-4 6-2 win at Flushing Meadows to set up a last-eight meeting with Simona Halep or another Italian, Flavia Pennetta.
Giorgi actually made the faster start, securing the first break and moving into a 4-1 lead.
However, from that position of strength, things went badly wrong as Vinci, also a quarter-finalist 12 months ago, wrested control.
Giorgi did not help herself, serving seven double faults to aid her more experienced opponent.
The in-form Halep was a set down to Pennetta when play was halted by rain.
Meanwhile, Daniela Hantuchova led American hope Alison Riske by a set when the rain arrived.
