Vlaar keen to build momentum
Ron Vlaar hopes Aston Villa are starting to head in the right direction after taking the positives from their recent performances.
Villa struggled for form in December but Vlaar has been encouraged by the way they have battled back in the Premier League since the turn of the year, taking four points from three games.
A 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Saturday left Villa in the top half of the table, and Vlaar believes they can now push on and enjoy a successful second half to the season.
"You have to earn the momentum and work hard," said Vlaar in the Daily Star.
"December wasn't an easy one for us but in January we won at Sunderland, lost to Arsenal and now have got a point at Anfield. That's not bad.
"We have to go on and use it as a boost to move forward.
"If you look back to the second half of Arsenal and Saturday's game it gives us a lot of positive things.
"We didn't let our heads go down. We kept on going and it wasn't easy in the first half.
"They got a boost from the goals with the crowd behind them but we played really well.
"The team spirit was really good and we kept fighting and battling for every ball. It was a well-deserved point."
Having been knocked out of the FA Cup, Villa now have extra time to prepare for a Midlands derby at home to West Bromwich Albion next Wednesday.
"There is nothing we can do about the break," said Vlaar.
"We have to produce the same performance again against West Brom next week.
"We have to believe we can do it at home, that's something we're working really hard on."
