Ward makes Dubai progress

James Ward battled through to the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with victory over Teymuraz Gabashvili.

The British number three, who was a wild card for the tournament, saw off his Russian opponent in two hours 20 minutes with a 2-6 6-4 7-6 (8/6) win in Dubai.

Ward, 27, lost the first set to the world number 60 and the second looked like it was heading the same way before he took a hold of it to claim a 6-4 advantage.

But the third could have gone either way before the Brit won the eventual tie break to advance to a second-round clash with another Russian, sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny, who beat Michal Przysiezny in straight sets.
