Rising British star Heather Watson bowed out of the Texas Open after a straight-sets loss to Yanina Wickmayer.
The Belgian, ranked fourth at Grapevine, was too strong for Watson as she recorded a 6-3 6-4 victory.
Fellow seeds Sorana Cirstea and Chanelle Scheepers also progressed to the second round.
Seventh seed Chanelle Scheepers blew away Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0 6-2, while No.8 seed Cirstea had to dig deep to see off Jarmila Groth 7-6 (7/2) 6-4.
However fifth seed Klara Zakopalova crashed out, though, after losing 6-0 7-6 (7/2) to Aleksandra Wozniak.
Alize Cornet and Bojana Jovanovski both overcame slow starts to record wins. Cornet beat Iveta Benesova 1-6 7-6 (7/3) 6-2, while Jovanovski toppled Alexandra Panova 4-6 6-1 6-1.
