Wilcox proud of promotion

Russ Wilcox could not hide his delight after guiding Scunthorpe to promotion despite a 2-0 defeat at Exeter.

The Iron saw their 28-match unbeaten run ended by Exeter, who guaranteed survival with the win, but Fleetwood's draw with Southend meant Scunthorpe cannot be caught in the race for promotion.

Craig Woodman opened the scoring with a stunning 25-yard strike and Jimmy Keohane wrapped up the win with his long-range shot squirming through the body of goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

"We are all delighted," Wilcox said. "I don't want to touch on the game too much because that was really disappointing but the bigger picture is we have got the club back up to League One at the first attempt.

"It is an outstanding achievement from everyone at the football club - it has been a team effort. Our 28-match unbeaten run is ended but the main thing is that we are promoted.

"The main ingredient has been hard work and quality within the group. The group have been outstanding; it has been a remarkable group effort.

"Huge credit to Exeter - in the two games against us this season, we look at them and say how are they looking for Football League survival? They should have been at the same end of table as us but obviously they have not been consistent."
