Williams ban ends tour hopes

Leicester fly-half Owen Williams will miss Wales' summer tour of South Africa after being given a six-week ban, sidelining him until September.

The 22-year-old from Neath would have been hoping to earn his first senior cap in the Test series with the Springboks but the Rugby Football Union has handed a lengthy suspension to Williams, who pleaded guilty for acts contrary to good sportsmanship.

The former Scarlets half-back admitted he "made contact with the eye(s) or eye area of Luther Burrell" in the Tigers' Aviva Premiership semi-final encounter with Northampton.

A statement from the RFU said: "Williams was given a six-week ban from today until the 1st September 2014. He is free to play again on 2nd of September.

"He will miss the three upcoming matches for Wales as well as three pre-season games for Leicester Tigers."
