Venus Williams booked her place in the quarter-finals of the Luxembourg Open with a straight-sets win over German ninth seed Mona Barthel.
In her first tournament since the US Open, Williams won through 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 in one hour 42 minutes to earn a last-eight clash with Italian top seed Roberta Vinci.
Vinci had no problems dispatching British lucky loser Anne Keothavong 6-4 6-1 in 64 minutes, breaking her opponent four times in the process.
Vinci's fellow seeds did not fare so well, with second seed Julia Goerges of Germany surprised 6-4 6-2 by Monica Niculescu of Romania and third seed Jelena Jankovic also falling 7-5 6-0 to Andrea Petkovic.
Sixth seed Sorana Cirstea was another seed to exit as she fell 7-6 (7/4) 6-1 to Ksenia Pervak, while Slovakian veteran Daniela Hantuchova moved through with a 6-4 4-6 6-2 win over Belgian wild card Kirsten Flipkens.
