Williams targets WC place

Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams is refusing to give up on the current Sky Bet Championship campaign as he targets a World Cup adventure.

The 25-year-old Australia international feared he might have kicked his last ball of the campaign when he damaged his Achilles tendon in January.

Having missed out on a trip to South Africa in 2010 through injury, Williams is determined not to be a spectator for another World Cup finals tournament and has revealed he is currently ahead of schedule in his recovery.

He told Boro's official website: "My dream of playing in the World Cup is still alive.

"I didn't make the last one and I thought this would be the one when I could make a big go of it. Maybe it isn't to be and I'll have to wait for the next one, but time will tell and I'm doing my best to get fit.

"I still think I've got a great chance of making it. I haven't told a lot of people this, but I'm feeling really good and way ahead of schedule."
