Worthington issues York warning

Nigel Worthington has issued a warning to his York players as they bid to secure the club's place in the play-offs with a win over Newport.

The Minstermen, unbeaten in 15 games, have lost only twice in the league this year and will seal a top-seven finish with a third straight victory on Saturday.

But Worthington stressed his players must reproduce their best form against the Welsh club or be prepared for a rude awakening.

"It's great for the club and fantastic for the supporters that we find ourselves in this position," Worthington said.

"But we have a very important game on Saturday and quite simply, we've got to get the win in order to get over the line.

"The players have been fantastic all season and everyone at the club has been working extremely hard to get us to where we are, but we must remain focused and stay level-headed.

"One more win will secure us a play-off place. We have great respect for Newport, they are a big, strong side.

"But if we go out there and play how we can play, we have the quality to get the job done - anything less and we could be in for a big surprise."

If York fail to beat Newport and Oxford win at home against Accrington, the race for the final play-off spot will go down to the final day when Worthington's side travel to Scunthorpe.

"Football being as it is, it may be that we go to Scunthorpe needing a result and if so we'll just have to deal with it," Worthington added.

"But we'll stay calm, prepare properly for the next game and then see where we are."
