Youzhny beaten in Bucharest
Mikhail Youzhny suffered a shock straight-sets defeat to world number 47 Robin Haase in the second round of the Nastase Tiriac Trophy.
Russian Youzhny, the second seed and currently ranked 15th in the world, went down 6-3 6-3 to his Dutch opponent in an hour and nine minutes on Thursday in Bucharest.
The win for Haase, who was defeated by Youzhny in the final of the Suisse Open last July, set up a quarter-final clash with Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who fought back after going a set down to overcome Romanian qualifier Adrian Ungur 4-6 6-0 6-3.
Third seed Gael Monfils of France comfortably moved past Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis 6-1 6-3 and will take on compatriot Paul-Henri Mathieu in the next round after the 32-year-old qualifier, who knocked out seventh seed Nicolas Mahut on Tuesday, continued to impress with a 6-3 6-2 victory over wild card Marius Copil of Romania.
