Youzhny misses out on landmark

Mikhail Youzhny was stranded on 399 career wins after he lost his first-round match at the season-ending Paris Masters to Marcel Granollers.

The Russian must now wait until 2013 to reach his landmark after he was broken five times on the way to a 6-4 6-3 defeat to the Spaniard.

Two qualifiers booked their place in the second round of the competition, with Colombia's Alejandro Falla and Poland's Jerzy Janowicz both victorious.

Janowicz upset Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (7/5) 6-4, while Falla saw off Florian Mayer 7-6 (7/3) 6-2.

Gilles Simon beat Marcos Baghdatis 7-5 6-1 in a higher-profile match-up, while there were two successful Frenchmen.

Wild card Benoit Paire won 6-3 6-4 against Pablo Andujar and Julien Benneteau bested Viktor Troicki 6-4 7-5.

Kevin Anderson, Andreas Seppi, Albert Ramos and Carlos Berlocq also progressed.
