Zagreb progress for Youzhny
Mikhail Youzhny began his bid for more title success at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors with a second-round victory over Igor Sijsling.
The third-seeded Russian, who won both the singles and doubles titles here last year, saw off the Dutchman 6-3 6-2 in just over an hour in his opening match having received a first-round bye.
Another player with an impressive record in this event, sixth seed Marcos Baghdatis, was also victorious today as he won his first-round clash against Germany's Tobias Kamke.
The Cypriot, who was singles champion here in 2007 and won the doubles alongside Youzhny last year, was given a tough test in his tournament opener but battled through 6-7 (6/8) 6-2 6-4.
It was not such a good day for eighth seed Lukas Lacko, who was forced to retire early on from his first-round match against Italian Flavio Cipolla due to a back injury.
Croatian Ivan Dodig gave the home fans something to cheer as he progressed with a 6-2 7-6 (7/3) triumph over German Benjamin Becker, but his countryman, wild card Antonio Veic, was unable to join him in the second round as he lost 2-6 6-3 6-3 to Dutchman Robin Haase.
