Cobbling seemingly incompatible bits of pop together needn't end in disaster - just look at Girls Aloud's genre-mashing on 'Biology'.
Sugababes seem to be trying the same trick on new single 'No Can Do'; bits of r'n'b, retro pop and coffee-table chill-out are chucked into the mix, but somehow the result is less than the sum of its parts.
A sample from Tennessee funkster Sweet Charles Sherrell's 'Yes It's You' is woven throughout, but sounds remarkably like the Jackson Five's 'I Want You Back' - giving the ladies' warblings a strange air of karaoke with the wrong lyrics. Elsewhere, things are just a little lacklustre; the trio's vocals are still strong, but missing the sass that made them famous. Here's hoping for a return to form soon.
