Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds' comedy The Proposal has claimed the top spot at the US box office with an estimated $34.1m.

The figures represent the best opening of Bullock's career, as well as providing Reynolds with his second blockbuster hit of the summer after X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The film also won the battle of the new comedies, comfortably beating Year One into fourth spot.

The Jack Black and Michael Cera movie took an estimated $20.2m but was unable to oust The Hangover or Up, which hung onto second and third places respectively.

Year One opens in UK cinemas on 26 June, while The Proposal opens on 22 July.
