White Denim - 'Let's Talk About It'

White Denim

Editor's rating

There are two types of white denim. There's the type that sits around snake-hipped and zip-toothed Johnny Borrell's skeletal rump, and then there's the Texan, blues-infused, guttural, caveman-punk trio. Thankfully, this new single is by the latter.

With drums that could have been lifted from any New York Dolls song, 'Let's Talk About It' swaggers like a moonshine-addled rancher - garage rock'n'roll at its scuzziest.

Frontman James Petralli's wheezy drawl compliments the lo-fi production, though his peculiar enunciation makes it hard not to imagine him struggling to keep his teeth in at the end of every line.

All of this drifts into insignificance, though, with the quality of the dirty blues riff throughout - it's just a shame that it never really progresses.

You get the impression that, while Jack White could have brought that errant verse into a nonsensical but brilliant chorus, White Denim just don't yet have the experience or the ideas to bring the track to a satisfying peak.
