England v South Africa Test Series 2012 – 1st Test
England v South Africa
Thu 19 Jul 2012, 11:00am BST, 11:00am local
South Africa win by an innings and 12 runs
| England | 385 (125.5 ovs) & 240 (97 ovs) |
|---|---|
| South Africa | 637-2d (189 ovs) |
Over 97. 5 runs. Bowler: Imran Tahir. England: 240/10(rr 2.47)
OUT! L.B.W. Verified by umpire after REFERRAL. Tahir to Anderson. Leg spinner back of a length, middle stump on the back foot defending, hit pad to short leg. Anderson calls for the review as he is hit on the pads by one that keeps low but it is academic as that stays with the onfield call. South Africa win their first Test at the Oval and have been by far the superior team. England actually looked like the better side after an Alastair Cook century led them to a commanding position at the end of Day One. If there was talk about the South African attack being ineffective that was soon stopped as the tourists hit back on Day Two to restrict England to 385. England responded well reducing South Africa to 1/1 and it looked as though this game would go close. That was until Graeme Smith, hitting a century in his 100th Test, Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis got to work. Although Smith was dismissed, Amla became the first South African to score a triple hundred, ably supported by yet another Jacques Kallis ton. The South Africans declared on a huge 637/2 leaving England one session to bat last night. The ball barely did anything for the England bowlers but the South Africans found movement from the off and picked up the first four wickets in a hurry to leave England facing an uphill battle on the final day. Despite losing Bopara early Bell and Prior looked to be steering England to a draw without alarm until the latter fell just before the new ball. Once that new ball was taken Ian Bell steered one to slip and the tail could not hang on as Dale Steyn picked up five wickets. England will have it all to do in the final two Test Matches, they looked a class below the South Africans on this occasion.
