commentary

Over 83. 1 run. Bowler: Vernon Philander. England: 294/10(rr 3.54)

OUT! Caught. Philander to Finn. Seaming away length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, outside edge to slips, fielded by Kallis. Finn lasts one ball, offering a healthy edge to the safe hands of Jacques Kallis at second slip. South Africa win by 51 runs and win the series 2-0, ousting England as the number one Test side in the world. England battled hard and at several moments looked like they could pull off an unlikely run chase, especially when Prior was reprieved. While Andrew Strauss' men have been second best in this series, they should feel no shame in losing to what is a top quality South Africa side. Philander finishes with 5-30 while Prior top scored with 73 for England. He finishes with the man of the match award, while Hashim Amla gets South Africa's player of the series. Matt Prior meanwhile wins England's player of the series.

OUT! Caught. Philander to Prior. Out-swinging length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, outside edge to slips, fielded by Smith. An incredible knock from Prior has finally come to an end. A hint of swing for Philander and Prior nicked it to low to Smith at first slip who made it look easy. That should be the end for England.

Philander to Prior. Out-swinging yorker, outside off stump no foot movement driving, mis-timed to extra cover for no runs, fielded by Rudolph.

Philander to Anderson. In-swinging yorker, to leg on the front foot flick, inside edge to fine leg for 1 run.

APPEAL! Philander to Anderson. In-swinging length ball, to leg on the front foot flick, hit pad to short extra cover for no runs, appeal made for L.B.W. A great inswinger from Philander but it might have just pitched outside leg stump. It was swinging quite a long way too.

Over 82. 5 runs. Bowler: Dale Steyn. England: 293/8(rr 3.57)

Steyn to Prior. Out-swinging length ball, outside off stump no foot movement cutting, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

FOUR! Steyn to Prior. Out-swinging length ball, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed past deep backward point for 4 runs. The new cherry flies off the bat and pierces deep point and third man for four.

Steyn to Prior. Out-swinging length ball, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers. Steyn nearly finds the outside edge with a beautiful outswinger.

Steyn to Prior. Length ball, wide outside off stump on the front foot, left to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

APPEAL! Steyn to Anderson. Short, to leg on the back foot Fended, well timed to point for 1 run, direct hit by Duminy, appeal made for Run Out. The third umpire is having a busy evening, but this one is clearly not out, Prior making his ground for a quick single.

NEW BALL. Steyn to Anderson. Back of a length, down leg side on the back foot, left to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

Somehow Prior has survived and England continue the run chase. Dale Steyn will take the new ball.

Over 81. 3 runs. Bowler: Imran Tahir. England: 288/8(rr 3.56)

Tahir to Prior. Leg spinner length ball, off stump on the front foot Steer, well timed to slips for no runs.

Tahir to Prior. Leg spinner half volley, off stump on the front foot pushing, well timed to deep cover for 2 runs.

APPEAL! Tahir to Prior. Leg spinner length ball, down leg side down the track Slog, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers, appeal made for Stumped. More controversy! Prior misses with the shot and de Villiers is really quick to whip the bails off. It goes to the third umpire, who takes a long time before judging that there wasn't enough evidence to give Prior out.

Tahir to Anderson. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the front foot sweeping, well timed to deep mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Petersen.

Tahir to Anderson. Leg spinner length ball, middle stump on the front foot defending, bat-pad to silly point for no runs, fielded by Smith.

Over 80. 2 runs. Bowler: Morne Morkel. England: 286/8(rr 3.58)

Morkel to Anderson. Length ball, down leg side on the back foot glancing, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

APPEAL! Morkel to Prior. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep backward point for no runs, fielded by Duminy, appeal made for Caught. Prior is caught by Duminy, but it was a no ball! Incredible scenes! The elation of the South Africans has turned to gutting disappointment, and England's hopes have quickly returned. Prior went big but skewed it to deep point where Duminy took a nice catch on the run. However the umpires were not convinced about the front foot and wanted it checked. Prior, having just about left the field, stops to look at the screen and Morkel's foot was just over the line, with no part of his foot behind the line.

Over 79. 2 runs. Bowler: Imran Tahir. England: 283/8(rr 3.58)

Tahir to Anderson. Googly length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

Tahir to Prior. Leg spinner half volley, down leg side on the front foot sweeping, well timed to fine leg for 1 run, fielded by Steyn.

OUT! Run Out. Tahir to Swann. Leg spinner half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to slips, fielded by Rudolph, by Tahir. Swann is gone for 41, a great cameo from him but it turns the game back in South Africa's direction. Swann chipped it awkwardly to backward point and he hesitated before setting off. Meanwhile Tahir got the ball and hit the stumps with a diving direct hit, and Swann was three inches short. He might have got home with a dive too.

Tahir to Swann. Quicker length ball, middle stump on the back foot cutting, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

Tahir to Swann. Googly length ball, down leg side on the back foot glancing, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by de Villiers.

FOUR! Morkel to Prior. Half volley, off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air under control past long on for 4 runs. Prior lofts it agonisingly over Steyn's head at mid on and gets four runs.

Morkel to Swann. Length ball, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed to third man for 1 run.

FOUR! Tahir to Prior. Leg spinner length ball, down leg side on the front foot reverse sweeping, well timed in the air under control past deep cover for 4 runs. Prior reverses it with the same result, and they get 15 off the over. That brings up Prior's fifty, his 22nd in Test cricket.

Tahir to Prior. Leg spinner half volley, down leg side on the front foot defending, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Tahir. The crowd are really getting into this now.

SIX! Tahir to Swann. Leg spinner length ball, down leg side down the track Slog, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. Tahir pitches it in the rough but the ball is immediately met by the middle of Graeme Swann's bat, a stunning shot!
