Northamptonshire claimed their first LV= County Championship win of the season as they defeated Hampshire by 117 runs.

Northants added 56 to their overnight total in the morning before they declared on 232 for nine to give Hampshire a winning target of 297 from 71 overs.

It was a mark they fell considerably short of as they were bowled out for 179 despite Michael Carberry's bright 61 off 88 balls, with paceman David Willey taking an outstanding five for 39.

Northants started the day on 176 for five, 240 runs ahead of their opponents, with their captain Andrew Hall resuming on 29 and Ireland wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien on three.

Hall moved on to 41 before he was caught at second slip by Liam Dawson in the fifth over of the day off the bowling of Chris Wood.

James Middlebrook (two) was run out after he and O'Brien hesitated in running a second off Dawson, giving Wood time to launch the ball from fine leg to the bowler's end and Dawson whipped off the bails.

David Willey also made just a couple before he left a straight delivery by Wood and his off stump was sent tumbling.

Lee Daggett (nine) then edged David Balcombe to Hampshire wicketkeeper Michael Bates before Northants declared after 80 overs leaving O'Brien unbeaten on 27 and Jack Brooks on three.

Dawson (four) played Willey's delivery on to his stumps in just the second over before Willey struck again when Sean Terry (19) slashed him to David Sales at second slip

After a brief rain delay, Daggett accounted for Australia international and stand-in captain Simon Katich, who made 31, when he was caught behind by O'Brien.

James Vince then lasted just two balls before he returned to the pavilion when he edged Daggett to Hall at first slip.

Former Zimbabwe international Sean Ervine (five) fell cheaply by clipping Daggett to Middlebrook at gully to give the bowler his third wicket in 12 balls.

Carberry then completed his half-century off 81 deliveries but Hampshire's hopes effectively died when he was trapped lbw by Willey with the last ball before tea.

Bates was the next to depart as he chopped Brooks on to his stumps after he made 20 before Willey bowled Hamza Riazuddin for a single.

Willey then completed the third five-wicket haul of his career when Wood (11) edged him to O'Brien and the result was wrapped up when Balcombe (eight) launched Brooks to Daggett at midwicket.
