match report

Edgbaston's soggy summer continued when Warwickshire's Friends Life t20 match against Gloucestershire was abandoned on Friday.

The clash was abandoned more than five hours before the scheduled start.

Umpire Martin Saggers arrived at Edgbaston early and called off the contest after a 1.45pm inspection following consultation with the England and Wales Cricket Board.

There were pools of water all across the outfield and with further heavy rain forecast for Birmingham the sensible decision was taken to abandon the match early to save spectators - and Gloucestershire's players - a wasted journey.

The abandonment followed the washout of England's one day international against Australia on Wednesday and was the sixth blank in 10 days cricket at Edgbaston in barely a month.

It was Warwickshire's third no result in four home Friends Life T20 matches.Their local derby against Worcestershire, which was due to attract a 25,000 sell-out crowd, was also abandoned without a ball being bowled and only half an hour's play was possible against Somerset before rain halted proceedings.

Warwickshire complete their Twenty20 group programme against Glamorgan at Edgbaston on Sunday and will be anxious for some action to clinch their place in the quarter-finals.
