commentary

Over 45. 6 runs. Bowler: Thisara Perera. Pakistan: 199/10(rr 4.42)

OUT! Caught. Perera to Ajmal. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid off, fielded by Thirimanne. Ajmal drives and drives with no real conviction as Sri Lanka wrap up the innings with five overs to spare. Ajmal looked for the big shot over long-off but his limited footwork was his undoing as he scooped a chance to mid-off. Thirimanne ran in and dived at full stretch to claim the final wicket of the innings. Sri Lanka fought back extremely well to win this match when it looked as if Pakistan had it by the scruff of the neck. Perera's hat-trick was the turning point in the Pakistan innings as the tourists fell apart. The bowling was good from the SriLankans but Pakistan's batsmen will have some soul searching to do. Sangakkara batted well for the Sri lankans and Azhar Ali almost matched him with his knock of 81 not out, the support was not forthcoming for Ali though. That ultimately proved the difference as only Misbah provided him with a long term partnership. Sri Lanka will look to wrap up the series in the final ODI while Pakistan will be looking to level it with Sri lanka leading 2-1.

OUT! Caught. Mathews to Gul. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to wicketkeeper, fielded by Sangakkara. OUT! Run Out. Perera to Tanvir. Length ball, off stump on the front foot pushing, to short leg, direct hit by Perera. Four wickets in one over althogh this one won't be credited as a wicket for Perera. Tanvir dabs the ball down and is desperate to get off strike, he sets off for the run but Ali says no. He turns back in a hurry but Perera is flying , literally flying as he picks up the ball and smashes the stumps in one movement. The third umpire confirms that he is short of his ground.

OUT! Caught. Perera to Ahmed. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, outside edge to slips, fielded by Jayawardene. HAT TRICK!! Perera gets a hat trick as Sarfraz Ahmed edges one into the slips.

OUT! Caught. Perera to Afridi. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to short extra cover, fielded by Chandimal. Another one bites the dust as Afridi goes on the drive first ball at the crease. The ball hits high on the bat and Chandimal claims the catch in the covers. Another delivery which did not do anything and Pakistan are imploding.

OUT! Caught. Perera to Khan. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, outside edge in the air under control to wicketkeeper, fielded by Sangakkara. Younis Khan never looked comfortable and his misery comes to a quick end. He fiddled at a regular delivery outside off-stump and managed to get a feather on one which did not do much. Sangakkara pouches the simplest of catches behind the stumps.

Perera to Khan. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, to point for no runs.

Over 40. Power Play Batting. 7 runs. Bowler: Lasith Malinga. Pakistan: 176/4(rr 4.40)

APPEAL! Malinga to Ali. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, to point for no runs, fielded by Mathews, fielded by Jayawardene, appeal made for Run Out. Younis only just survives this run out chance as the throw to the non-strikers end needed to be lobbed back as Malinga did not make his way back to the stumps. Jayawardene clips off the bails but Younis lives to die another day.

OUT! Caught. Kulasekara to Akmal. Seaming away length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, outside edge to wicketkeeper, fielded by Sangakkara. Very loose shot Akmal when he instead needed to consolidate before launching in the fashion he attempted. Slight deviation off the pitch but the batsman should have thought better of it. Pakistan are starting to play themselves into trouble, again.

He did not get enough elevation on the shot and Kulasekera did the rest at mid-off.

Sri Lanka win by 44 runs

Sri Lanka243-8 (50 ovs)
Pakistan199 (45 ovs)

match report

Thisara Perera grabbed a hat-trick amid a stunning Pakistan collapse to hand Sri Lanka a 44-run win in the fourth ODI in Colombo.

Six Pakistan batsmen made ducks as Perera single-handedly won the match for the hosts in a single over - during which he claimed his hat-trick before running out Sohail Tanvir.

After Kumar Sangakkara fell three runs short of a 14th ODI century in anchoring the hosts' 243 for eight, Pakistan looked set to reel in the target as they reached 166 for two in reply.

But the tourists' batsmen simply folded thereafter, at one stage losing seven for 13, to be bowled out for 199 with five overs unused.

Perera, fresh from his career-best six for 44 in the second match of the series, turned matters irretrievably his side's way when he removed Younus Khan, Shahid Afridi and then Sarfraz Ahmed, caught by Mahela Jayawardene at slip, from consecutive balls of the 41st over.

The 23-year-old was not done there though, as he acrobatically ran out Tanvir two balls later before ending the match by removing last man Saeed Ajmal to finish with four for 42.

It was the 15th time in 18 chases above 240 that Pakistan have now come up short and left them 2-1 down in the series with a game to play.

Rain had washed out Wednesday's third game in Colombo and it threatened to interfere again today as the players were forced off for an hour with Sri Lanka 91 for three in the 26th over.

When the players returned Pakistan were made to pay after Umar Gul spilled a simple chance off Sangakkara, then on 35, who lofted Shahid Afridi straight at him.

The left-hander cashed in on the life, and after reaching his 71st ODI half-century from 99 balls he upped his rate in a crucial 110-run stand with Jayawardene.

Their partnership was broken when Jayawardene (40) was bowled by Tanvir and an over later Sangakkara was judged caught in the deep going for his century.

The wicketkeeper-batsman had hit seven fours and three sixes in his 130-ball stay, most of which came after reaching 50, and his exit denied Sri Lanka from any significant late hitting.

That looked like it might be costly when Pakistan opener Azhar Ali (81 not out) and Misbah-ul-Haq (53) put on 113 to seemingly set Pakistan on course for a comfortable win.

But when Misbah was expertly caught by Nuwan Kulasekera off Lasith Malinga in the deep Pakistan disintegrated in the face of Perera again.
