commentary

Over 10. 8 runs. Bowler: Ravichandran Ashwin. England: 58/0(rr 5.80)

Ashwin to Compton. Off break length ball, off stump on the front foot glancing, missed to fine leg for no runs. England win by ten wickets. The ball spins down the leg side and Compton lets out a roar of delight as those runs mean England have won the second Test by ten wickets. A deserved victory for England, and an impressive one, given how the team played in Ahmedabad. England have batted better, bowled better and have won this match against the odds, especially after losing what many expected to be a crucial toss. The innings of 186 by Kevin Pietersen and the bowling of Monty Panesar are the big highlights. There a lot of other positives too, for the visitors. Swann and Panesar outbowled the trio of Indian spinners. Alastair Cook is in fantastic form, with another century in this Test. Kevin Pietersen's "reintegration" into the side is complete, with team spirit looking good in the camp. Sure, there could have been more runs from the likes of Trott and Bairstow, and their catching is still a work in progress, but, with the series level, England can now realistically think about winning this series. India bowled fairly well but didn't have a plan B to KP and Cook, and the runs have dried up for some of their batsmen, Tendulkar and Dhoni especially. There is no doubt they will be back with a bang in the third Test, but Duncan Fletcher, the India coach, will have some work to do between now and then. Kevin Pietersen is the man of the match, and he talks modestly about his teammates, praising the efforts of Panesar, Swann and Cook. The third Test at Kolkata begins on the 5th December, and this promises to be one of the best Test series of recent times. Don't miss it.
