commentary

Over 38. Power Play Batting. 1 run. Bowler: Kyle Mills. England: 186/5(rr 4.89)

Mills to Root. Bouncer, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed to deep mid wicket for 1 run. Root sees England home to secure a comfortable win for the tourists that never seemed in doubt once they ripped out the top of the New Zealand batting order. England win their first ODI series against New Zealand since a one-off win in 1994. None of the batsmen made 50, but today was all about the bowlers, with Finn the outstanding contributor. He has a new shortened run-up and his pace and bounce was too much for the Black Caps batsmen. The hosts might need to reconsider Brendon McCullum's role, as he was once again left with too much to do. New Zealand have some injury concerns - including their skipper - ahead of a Test series that England will be firm favourites for.

Mills to Root. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot flick, well timed to mid wicket for no runs, fielded by Taylor.

Mills to Root. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to point for no runs, fielded by Williamson.

Over 37. Power Play Batting. 7 runs. Bowler: James Franklin. England: 185/5(rr 5.00)

Franklin to Woakes. Length ball, middle stump moves in front working, well timed to deep mid wicket for 2 runs, fielded by Southee. Scores are level.

Franklin to Root. Length ball, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, well timed to cover for 1 run, shy attempt by McCullum. Brendon McCullum is nursing a side strain and is rather surprisingly still fielding. He swoops well at cover and would have run out Root with a direct hit.

Franklin to Root. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to cover for no runs, fielded by McCullum.

Franklin to Root. Length ball, outside off stump moves in front working, well timed to mid on for no runs, fielded by Ellis.

Franklin to Root. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Franklin.

FOUR! Franklin to Root. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past deep extra cover for 4 runs.

Over 36. Power Play Batting. 1 run. Bowler: Kyle Mills. England: 178/5(rr 4.94)

Mills to Woakes. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to mid on for no runs, fielded by McCullum.

Mills to Woakes. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Mills.

Mills to Root. Off cutter short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed to deep backward square leg for 1 run, fielded by Ellis.

Mills to Root. Out-swinging back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, well timed to short extra cover for no runs, fielded by McCullum.

Mills to Root. Out-swinging length ball, outside off stump on the back foot driving, mis-timed to short extra cover for no runs, fielded by Williamson.

With nine needed from 90 balls, the batting power play arrives.

Over 35. 5 runs. Bowler: Andrew Ellis. England: 177/5(rr 5.06)

Ellis to Root. Bouncer, middle stump on the back foot pulling, well timed to fine leg for 1 run, fielded by Rutherford.

Ellis to Woakes. Length ball, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, well timed to third man for 1 run, fielded by Elliott.

Ellis to Woakes. Length ball, outside off stump on the back foot Steer, mis-timed to gully for no runs, fielded by Taylor.

Ellis to Root. Short, middle stump on the back foot pulling, well timed to fine leg for 1 run, fielded by Rutherford.

Ellis to Root. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to mid wicket for no runs, fielded by Taylor.

Ellis to Root. Length ball, middle stump moves in front working, well timed to fine leg for 2 runs, fielded by Rutherford.

Over 34. 1 run. Bowler: Tim Southee. England: 172/5(rr 5.06)

Southee to Woakes. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, mis-timed to mid off for no runs, fielded by Mills. Decent figures of 10-1-48-3 for Southee - he will be pleased to have got some overs under his belt ahead of the Test series.

Southee to Woakes. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, for no runs, fielded by Williamson.

Southee to Root. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed to deep square leg for 1 run, fielded by Ellis.

Southee to Root. Bouncer, middle stump on the back foot hooking, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Watling.

OUT! Caught. Southee to Buttler. Bouncer, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to leg gully, fielded by Watling. Southee surprises Buttler with another bouncer and the Somerset man splices the ball into the legside, Watling making excellent ground to take a diving catch.

Southee to Buttler. Bouncer, middle stump ducked, left to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Watling.

Over 33. 4 runs. Bowler: Andrew Ellis. England: 171/4(rr 5.18)

Ellis to Root. Length ball, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, mis-timed to mid off for no runs, fielded by McCullum.

Ellis to Buttler. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed to deep mid wicket for 3 runs, fielded by Franklin.

Ellis to Buttler. Length ball, off stump on the front foot pushing, mis-timed to mid on for no runs, fielded by Franklin.

OUT! Caught. Ellis to Morgan. Bouncer, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed in the air uncontrolled to fine leg, fielded by Mills. Mills takes a fine catch on the rope, similar to Anderson's earlier - Morgan got plenty of this and thought he had six, but the tall bowler takes the catch at full stretch above his head. A nice confidence-boosting cameo by the Middlesex man.

Ellis to Morgan. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, mis-timed to mid wicket for no runs, fielded by McCullum.

Ellis to Root. Length ball, outside off stump backing away working, well timed to deep square leg for 1 run, fielded by Southee.

Over 32. 14 runs. Bowler: Tim Southee. England: 167/3(rr 5.22)

SIX! Southee to Morgan. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot flick, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. The extra ball is punished, much to Southee's disgust - he felt that was a harsh wide call and he sails rather near the wind in his protestations to umpire Ravi.

Wide Southee to Morgan. Length ball, wide outside off stump on the back foot, left to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Watling.

Southee to Root. Full toss, down leg side on the front foot flick, well timed to fine leg for 1 run, fielded by Elliott.

Southee to Morgan. Length ball, outside off stump down the track flick, mis-timed to deep backward square leg for 1 run, fielded by Franklin.

FOUR! Southee to Morgan. Slower ball half volley, outside off stump down the track driving, well timed past long off for 4 runs.

Southee to Morgan. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to point for no runs, fielded by McCullum.

APPEAL! Southee to Root. Length ball, down leg side down the track flick, hit pad to square leg for no runs, fielded by Taylor, appeal made for L.B.W. Root is well down the wicket - this would have missed leg stump.

Over 31. 2 runs. Bowler: Andrew Ellis. England: 153/3(rr 4.94)

Ellis to Root. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed to deep square leg for 1 run, fielded by Southee. Drinks are taken. These batsmen are taking contrasting approaches and with 33 needed from 31 overs, they can take their pick. When Kevin Pietersen returns to this team a batsman will need to make way and these two are the likeliest candidates.

Ellis to Root. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, to mid off for no runs, fielded by McCullum.

Ellis to Root. Short, to leg moves in front flick, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Watling.

Ellis to Root. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Ellis.

FOUR! Ellis to Morgan. Length ball, outside off stump down the track flick, mis-timed in the air under control past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. One hand comes off the bat, but Morgan gets enough to find the rope.

Ellis to Root. Bouncer, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, well timed to deep backward square leg for 1 run, fielded by Southee.

Ellis to Morgan. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Steer, well timed to third man for 1 run, fielded by Rutherford.

Ellis to Root. Back of a length, middle stump moves in front working, well timed to deep backward square leg for 1 run, fielded by Southee.
