commentary

Over 43. 2 runs. Bowler: Rangana Herath. Australia: 141/5(rr 3.28)

Herath to Johnson. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to deep backward point for 1 run, fielded by Samaraweera. It is perhaps more fitting that Hussey does not hit the winning run - ever the professional, he would not turn down a single. A fine career comes to an end and Australia have again seen today what they will miss - calmness under pressure and a rock solid technique. His colleagues in the top order did not possess the same traits today, which summed up Australia's perfomance in this Test. They did enough to win, but there was a hint of complacency, the tone perhaps set by the aggressive team selection and decision to bowl first. Captain and coach will know they must raise their game if they are to win in India and England. The impact of Jackson Bird, renaissance of Phillip Hughes and development of the pace attack are Australia's high points of this series, whilst Sri Lanka have some positives to take into the One Day series, despite the 3-0 scoreline.<br>Karunaratne, Thirimanne and Chandimal batted well enough in this match to suggest there will be life after Sangakkara and Jayawardene and Herath showed why he is one of the world's premier bowlers. There is nonetheless a lot for new skipper Mathews to work on.

Over 41. 3 runs. Bowler: Rangana Herath. Australia: 136/5(rr 3.32)

Herath to Johnson. Stock length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, to mid off for no runs, fielded by Fernando. The players depart for tea, with Australia needing just five runs to win. Hussey will be on strike - the stage is set for the retiring stalwart to sign off in style. The top order have chipped away at this target with varying degrees of impressiveness and Sri Lanka are left to rue their collapse after tea yesterday. Another 100 runs would have made this a really tough chase for the hosts.
