commentary

Over 20. 4 runs. Bowler: Mitchell Starc. Sri Lanka: 75/6(rr 3.75)

FOUR! Starc to Perera. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, thick edge past deep backward point for 4 runs. Perera threads one past backward point to seal a four-wicket win, meaning Sri Lanka go 2-1 up with two matches to play. They slightly crept over the line, but the margin of victory should not detract from how dominant they were for most of this match - the Australian batsmen had no answer to the swing of Kulasekara and Malinga.<br>The home pacemen did their best to cause similar panic, but the catching was inconsistent, suggesting they have a lot to do to salvage this series. Kushal Perera showed some poise with the bat as others lost their head and the tourists will go to Sydney on Sunday full of confidence.

Starc to Perera. Yorker, outside off stump on the front foot driving, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

OUT! Caught. Starc to Mendis. Bouncer, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid wicket, fielded by McKay. Mendis is beaten for pace and can only get this high on the bat, McKay taking the easy catch to ironic cheers.

Starc to Mendis. Out-swinging half volley, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, well timed back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Starc.

Starc to Mendis. Length ball, middle stump on the front foot defending, to short leg for no runs, fielded by Bailey.

Starc to Mendis. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Starc.

Over 19. 1 run. Bowler: Moises Henriques. Sri Lanka: 71/5(rr 3.74)

Henriques to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to short extra cover for no runs, fielded by Bailey.

Henriques to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

Henriques to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

Henriques to Mendis. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, leading edge in the air uncontrolled to cover for 1 run, dropped catch by Warner. An apt end to a shambolic display by Australia, Warner letting a steepling but regulation chance go straight through his hands. He has taken two good catches but drops the simplest. Howls of derision swirl around the Gabba - the home crowd have not been happy with what they have seen today.

Henriques to Mendis. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot, shoulders arms to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

Henriques to Mendis. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to mid off for no runs, fielded by Starc.

Over 18. 1 run. Bowler: Mitchell Starc. Sri Lanka: 70/5(rr 3.89)

Starc to Perera. Yorker, outside off stump on the front foot defending, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

Starc to Mendis. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot dropped, to extra cover for 1 run, fielded by Johnson.

Starc to Mendis. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, to extra cover for no runs, fielded by Johnson.

Starc to Mendis. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot dropped, to extra cover for no runs, shy attempt by Johnson, fielded by McKay. A bad mix-up between the batsmen gives Johnson the chance to line up a throw at the bowler's end, but he misses by a foot or so. Perera was so far down that Starc should really have got back towards the stumps to take the throw.

Starc to Mendis. In-swinging length ball, down leg side on the back foot working, hit pad to point for no runs, fielded by Warner.

Starc to Mendis. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by Starc.

Over 17. 6 runs. Bowler: Moises Henriques. Sri Lanka: 69/5(rr 4.06)

Henriques to Perera. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed to cover for no runs, fielded by Hughes.

Henriques to Perera. Off cutter length ball, outside off stump on the front foot, shoulders arms to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

Henriques to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, well timed to short extra cover for no runs, fielded by Bailey.

Henriques to Perera. Back of a length, to leg on the back foot working, well timed to mid wicket for 2 runs, fielded by McKay.

FOUR! Henriques to Perera. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed past deep cover for 4 runs. A poor start by Henriques, dropping short twice - Perera doesn't miss out this time.

Henriques to Perera. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed to point for no runs, fielded by Warner.

Over 16. 6 runs. Bowler: Mitchell Starc. Sri Lanka: 63/5(rr 3.94)

Starc to Mendis. In-swinging length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, bat-pad in the air uncontrolled to short leg for no runs, fielded by Bailey.

OUT! Caught. Starc to Tharanga. Out-swinging length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to slips, fielded by Clarke. Tharanga has struggled in this series and misses out on the chance to get some red ink by his name, chasing a wide one that swings away further. Clarke takes a sharp low catch to his left at first slip.

Starc to Tharanga. Seaming in back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, inside edge to gully for no runs, fielded by Hughes.

Starc to Tharanga. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, thick edge to third man for 2 runs, fielded by McKay.

Starc to Tharanga. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot, shoulders arms to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

FOUR! Starc to Tharanga. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past deep cover for 4 runs.

Starc rather surprisingly returns at the Vulture Street End.

Over 15. 9 runs. Bowler: Clint McKay. Sri Lanka: 57/4(rr 3.80)

FOUR! McKay to Perera. Short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed in the air under control past deep cover for 4 runs. An ideal start for Sri Lanka after the tea break - any Aussie optimism has quickly disappeared. 18 runs needed.

McKay to Perera. Back of a length, off stump on the back foot defending, inside edge to silly point for no runs, fielded by Bailey.

FOUR! McKay to Perera. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past deep extra cover for 4 runs.

McKay to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to mid off for no runs, fielded by Henriques.

McKay to Tharanga. Back of a length, to leg on the back foot dropped, to mid wicket for 1 run, fielded by Doherty.

McKay to Tharanga. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot, shoulders arms to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

Australia have threatened enough and created the chances to suggest more wickets are in the offing. McKay will continue - he has been unlucky, but a slightly fuller length might have found the edge more.

Over 14. 6 runs. Bowler: Mitchell Johnson. Sri Lanka: 48/4(rr 3.43)

Johnson to Perera. Bouncer, off stump swayed away, left to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade. The players depart for the long break they should have had between innings. Sri Lanka have been nervous and skittish in this small run chase and could easily have lost more than four wickets, with McKay particularly unlucky in beating the bat with regularity. Johnson is the midst of one of his purple patch spells, but the tourists need just 27 more runs and have two batsmen at the crease who appear calm and well-organised.

Johnson to Perera. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, to cover for no runs, fielded by Warner.

Johnson to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to extra cover for no runs, fielded by Starc.

Johnson to Perera. Slower ball half volley, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, well timed to deep backward point for 2 runs, fielded by Warner, fielded by McKay.

Johnson to Perera. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, to backward point for no runs, fielded by Hughes.

FOUR! Johnson to Perera. Seaming away short, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, well timed in the air under control past deep backward point for 4 runs.

Over 13. 4 runs. Bowler: Clint McKay. Sri Lanka: 42/4(rr 3.23)

McKay to Tharanga. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to mid on for no runs, fielded by Henriques.

McKay to Tharanga. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to mid off for no runs, fielded by Doherty.

McKay to Tharanga. Back of a length, outside off stump no foot movement defending, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

McKay to Tharanga. Seaming away back of a length, outside off stump no foot movement, shoulders arms to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

McKay to Tharanga. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, back to bowler for no runs, fielded by McKay.

FOUR! McKay to Tharanga. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past long off for 4 runs, mis-fielded by Doherty. Doherty dives over one at mid off - the Aussies can't afford such lapses.

Over 12. 2 runs. Bowler: Mitchell Johnson. Sri Lanka: 38/4(rr 3.17)

Johnson to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to extra cover for no runs, fielded by Starc.

Johnson to Perera. Short, outside off stump on the back foot defending, to cover for no runs, fielded by Warner.

Johnson to Tharanga. Out-swinging half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed to mid on for 1 run, fielded by Starc.

Johnson to Tharanga. Yorker, off stump on the front foot defending, to short leg for no runs, fielded by Bailey.

OUT! Caught. Johnson to Mathews. Bouncer, off stump on the back foot Fended, in the air uncontrolled to silly mid on, fielded by Starc. Sri Lanka are really wobbling, a batsman not for the first time this summer undone by a Johnson bouncer - Mathews gets in a tangle, taking his eyes off the ball and it lobs into the legside to give a hat-trick opportunity.

OUT! Caught. Johnson to Thirimanne. Length ball, outside off stump down the track driving, well timed in the air uncontrolled to point, fielded by Warner. A superb catch by Warner high to his left gets rid of the struggling Thirimanne - that was well-hit and went quickly. Sri Lanka are not yet halfway to their target - the Aussies sense a chance.

Wide Johnson to Thirimanne. Yorker, wide down leg side moves in front glancing, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

Over 11. 3 runs. Bowler: Clint McKay. Sri Lanka: 36/2(rr 3.27)

McKay to Perera. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, to mid off for no runs, fielded by Doherty.

McKay to Perera. Seaming away back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

McKay to Thirimanne. Length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, inside edge to fine leg for 1 run, fielded by Johnson.
