The plot: Boxer turned thug Mickey Cohen tightens his grip on 1940s Los Angeles to the dismay of police chief Bill Parker. In desperation, Parker approaches one of his best men, Sergeant John O'Mara, to establish a covert team of officers, who are willing not only to bend the law but also to break it in order to crush Cohen and his henchmen. O'Mara recruits his Gangster Squad and the scene is set for a battle royale between the cops and the hoodlums.

what the others say
"Sean Penn'a not been this fun since Jeff Spicoli and there's plenty of rip-roaring action, but Gangster Squad proves a minor entry in the annals of LA noir."
"Accept the film on its own terms, as a period action thriller, and you'll walk away satisfied - assuming your every last nerve hasn't been jangled to jelly."
"Typified by Penn's blustery performance, Gangster Squad is sleek, stylish but superficial. Easy on the eye, even easier on the brain, it doesn?t last long in the memory."
