Starring: Tony Kgoroge, Patrick Mofokeng, Matt Stern, Julian Lewis Jones, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon

Directed by: Clint Eastwood

The plot: Following his release from Robben Island in February 1990 and subsequent election as the president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela inherits a country deeply scarred by apartheid. Nowhere is this more pronounced than on the rugby field: only white South Africans cheer the Springboks. With only a year until the Rugby World Cup, Mandela attempts to inspire captain Francois Pienaar and his men to victory.

what the others say

The Sun

"Freeman is fantastic as Mandela. ...the story is so perfect for cinema you have to remind yourself it actually happened."

Time Out

"Invictus isn't one of Eastwood's best films, especially judged against the late flowering of his career since 2003's Mystic River. But it's still a noble and compassionate work that in its later scenes manages successfully to invest our emotions in the triumph of an important - if overlong - sporting victory."

ViewLondon

"Invictus is a solid retelling of an undeniably inspirational story but it's unforgivably bland in places and you can't help thinking that it might have worked a lot better as a documentary."
