The plot: Following a high profile court case that results in a suspended six month prison sentence, journalist Mikael Blomkvist is hired by industrialist Henrik Vanger to locate his niece, who vanished without trace many years ago. Taking up residence in a cottage on the Vanger estate, Mikael begins his investigation, aided by mysterious computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander.
