The plot: Poet and journalist Mark O'Brien was paralysed from the neck down by childhood polio and requires an iron lung to breathe. No-nonsense nurse Vera cares for him, wheeling Mark around California with a breathing tube. When he is asked to pen a feature on Sex And The Disabled, Mark is introduced to married sex surrogate Cheryl, who slowly breaks down his defences with body awareness exercises before they attempt intercourse.

what the others say
"In its barest form this is a traditional rites-of-passage yarn, dealing in first love and lost innocence, and even with a candid discussion of sex, it's mostly sweetness and light."
"Lewin, who has fought his own lifelong polio battle, handles tricky material with a gentle, empathetic touch."
"Formulaic but uplifting, positive and accessible."
