The plot: Brilliant plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard is haunted by the death of his wife in a fire and he works night and day to develop an artificial skin that can withstand potentially fatal situations. Aided by housekeeper Marilia, Robert holds a young woman called Vera Cruz hostage in his home, using her as a human guinea for grafts of his experimental skin. Over time, Robert begins to fall hopelessly in love with Vera and he lets his guard down, believing she feels the same for him.
