live commentary

90 mins:Kazakhstan 1-2 Republic of Ireland. Ireland begin their qualification campaign with a win thanks to late goals from Doyle and Keane.

90 mins:What a turnaround for Ireland, Doyle fires the ball into the back of the net after Ward's well placed header found the substitute. The visitors don't really deserve this in all honesty but results are all important and Giovanni Trapattoni will be a relieved man. There will be four minutes of added time.

89 mins:Goal! Kazakhstan 1-2 Republic of Ireland. Kevin Doyle.

87 mins:Ireland penalty! Robbie Keane is dragged down after trying to get on the end of McGeady's cross.

87 mins:Kazakhstan 1-1 Republic of Ireland. Robbie Keane makes no mistake from the spot, great penalty into the top corner and Ireland are level.

85 mins:Kazakhstan make a change as the injured Ulan Konysbaev is replaced by Sergey Gridin.

84 mins:Whelan's shot is blocked and Kazakhstan clear as far as the half way line.

82 mins:Robbie Keane is judged to have fouled one of the Kazakh defenders and the hosts win a free kick deep in their own half.

80 mins:McCarthy tries his luck from range but his effort is blocked and Ireland are forced back to the half way line. Ten minutes left to find an equaliser for the visitors.

78 mins:Ireland have a corner after Long's shot is blocked, McGeady tries a low drive but it doesn't come off as O'Shea hits the ball out for a goal kick.

77 mins:Shot from Dzolchiyev but his effort is just wide.

76 mins:McGeady sends a free kick into the Kazakhstan penalty area but Sidelnikov gathers the ball easily, the Spartak Moscow man has had a mixed game and in general his deliveries have been fairly poor in all honesty.

73 mins:Whelan shoots from distance but his effort is easily saved by Sidelnikov. A wasted effort really it would have taken a fantastic effort to beat the keeper from that distance.

71 mins:Scmidtgal sends a free kick into the Ireland penalty area but O'Dea clears and is awarded a free kick after being shoved.

70 mins:Another change for Ireland as Jonathan Walters is replaced by Shane Long.

69 mins:The hosts make their first change as Tanat Nuserbaev makes way for Baurzhan Dzolchiyev.

68 mins:Nuserbaev tries his luck from range but his effort is wide.

66 mins:McGeady's cross is cleared by Kirov as Ireland seek an elusive equaliser.

63 mins:Kazakhstan seem fairly happy to sit back now and try and hold out for a 1-0 win, it could be a dangerous tactic with over 25 minutes left but Ireland have offered very little going forward in all honesty.

59 mins:Decent ball into the box from McGeady but Mukhtarov does well to head clear with Keane lurking.

58 mins:First change for Ireland as Simon Cox is replaced by Kevin Doyle.

55 mins:Ireland win a free kick on the left hand side, McGeady's deliver is a good one but Sidelnikov gets a hand to it and Ireland win a corner. Cox's delivery from the corner is poor and the hosts clear.

54 mins:Cox's cross runs out of play for a goal kick.

53 mins:Kazakhstan break down the left but Westwood does well to reach the cross before Ostapenko to end the danger for Ireland.

50 mins:Ireland still can't really get into the game and a loss here could be a disaster. They're in Group C alongside Sweden and Germany so qualifying for Brazil is a tough task anyway and defeat in Kazakhstan, even if it is their opener, could prove costly.

46 mins:The hosts get the second half underway in Astana.

45 mins:Half time: Kazakhstan 1-0 Republic of Ireland.

44 mins:Another Ireland corner and again McGeady takes, the delivery was good but the hosts have everyone back and there are just too many bodies in the box for Ireland to get a shot away.

43 mins:It's all Kazakhstan now and Konysbaev hits the post, it wouldn't have counted as he had been deemed offside by the officials but Ireland are rocking after the hosts' opener.

38 mins:The warning signs had been there and now Ireland have to come back from a goal down. A Schmidtgal free kick found Kazakh skipper Nurdauletov, who scored with a glancing headed shot at the back post. In truth Ireland haven't been great and Giovanni Trapattoni has a big half time team talk coming up if things stay the same.

37 mins:Goal: Kazakhstan 1-0 Republic of Ireland.

34 mins:Ward's cross is cleared for a corner, McGeady decides to try a low one to the near post and O'Dea reaches the ball but he can't get any power on his headed effort and the Kazakhstan keeper Sidelnikov saves comfortably.

32 mins:Ireland free kick, McGeady's delivery is a dangerous one but Sidelnikov clears for a corner, which comes to nothing as Kirov clears.

30 mins:Tanat Nuserbaev is booked for a late challenge on O'Shea, quite a harsh decision it wasn't a particularly bad challenge.

29 mins:McGeady's cross nearly finds Keane but the ball runs out for a Kazakhstan goal kick.

25 mins:Ireland are starting to control the ball now after a mini period of Kazakhstan pressure.

24 mins:Kazakhstan have a chance from a free kick but Westwood does well to save Bogdanov's headed effort.

23 mins:Cox shoots into the side netting after a good one-two between the forward and McGeady.

21 mins:A half chance for Kazakhstan but Westwood reacts first and gathers the ball to end the danger for Ireland.

19 mins:Robbie Keane managed to create some space for himself in the box but he can't get enough purchase on his final shot and his effort is wide of the target.

18 mins:A bit of a scramble on the edge of the Kazakhstan penalty area sees shots from both Cox and McGeady blocked.

15 mins:Schmidtgal crosses for Kazakhstan but there is no one there to meet his decent delivery. The hosts have come into the game a bit more and have controlled possession for the past few minutes.

12 mins:Ireland win a free kick 30 yards out, but their set piece was not particularly well executed and Sidelnikov gathers the ball comfortably.

11 mins:No breakthrough as yet in this World Cup Group C qualifying fixture, Ireland have looked much the stronger of the two sides but Kazakhstan don't look like pushovers at this stage. Ireland have a goal kick after Kirov failed to reach a Bogdanov pass.

9 mins:The hosts manage to get forward for the first time in the match and Bogdanov shoots from range but his effort is way wide of Westwood's goal.

7 mins:McGeady shoots from distance but it doesn't trouble Sidelnikov.

5 mins:A goal kick from Westwood led to a Walters chance then a McCarthy shot, Ireland then won three corners in a row but couldn't hit the target as Kazakhstan clear.

4 mins:Ireland are already looking the stronger of the two sides in the early stages and Walters nearly managed to get clear of the defence but he couldn't quite reach the pass and the hosts restart play with a goal kick.

1 mins:The game is underway in Kazakhstan.
